چکیده

During the cleaning and shaping of the root canal, various irrigants have been used to reduce the residual debris, necrotic tissue, and bacteria, as well as to remove smear layer. Though sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the most common irrigant used in root canal treatment, chlorhexidine (CHX) has been suggested as either an alternative or an adjunct root canal irrigant because of its antimicrobial qualities and substantivity. A combination of NaOCl and CHX for root canal irrigation has been advocated to enhance their antimicrobial properties. Zehender proposed an irrigation regimen as the following: 2.5% NaOCl during instrumentation, and a final flush of the canals is performed in the sequence of 17% EDTA, 2.5% NaOCl, and 2% CHX. However, the presence of NaOCl in the canals during irrigation with CHX produces an orange-brown precipitate known as parachloroaniline (PCA) (Figure 1). The precipitate occludes the dentinal tubules and may compromise the seal of the obturated root canal. Leaching of PCA from the insoluble precipitate is of concern because it has been shown to be cytotoxic in rats and possibly carcinogenic in humans (International Agency for Research on Cancer group 2B). Evaluation of the interaction between sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine gluconate and its effect on root dentin.

The combination of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX) forms a precipitate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of irrigating root canals with a combination of NaOCl and CHX on root dentin and dentinal tubules by using the environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) and a computer program (Photoshop CS2). Forty-four extracted single-rooted human teeth were ins...

Using diazotization to characterize the effect of heat or sodium hypochlorite on 2.0% chlorhexidine.

INTRODUCTION The combination of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX) results in the formation of a precipitate. In a previous study, we demonstrated the formation of 4-chloraniline (PCA) in the precipitate in an amount directly related to the concentration of NaOCl used. AIMS AND METHODS The aim of the present study was to use a diazotization technique to confirm the presence o...

An in vitro spectroscopic analysis to determine whether para-chloroaniline is produced from mixing sodium hypochlorite and chlorhexidine.

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine whether para-chloroaniline (PCA) is formed through the reaction of mixing sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX). METHODS Initially, commercially available samples of chlorhexidine acetate (CHXa) and PCA were analyzed with 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Two solutions, NaOCl and CHXa, were warmed t...

Comparative Evaluation of Two Final Irrigation Techniques for the Removal of Precipitate Formed by the Interaction between Sodium Hypochlorite and Chlorhexidine.

AIM To evaluate the effectiveness of two final irrigation techniques for the removal of precipitate formed by the interaction between sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (CHX). MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty freshly extracted human maxillary incisor teeth were taken and randomly divided into three groups, containing 20 teeth each. Group 1 (control group), were irrigated with 5 ml of 2....

Assessment of precipitate formation on interaction of irrigants used in different combinations: an in vitro study.

INTRODUCTION Irrigants play an essential role in the successful debridement and disinfection of pulp space. Various combination of irrigants used during root canal treatment enhance their efficacy, but some form precipitates which affects the diffusion of intracanal medicaments and the seal of the obturated root canal. AIM To evaluate the combination of various irrigants whether it forms the ...
